ABOUT VANESSA
Marketing has always felt personal to me
Behind every business is a real person who cares deeply about their work, and behind every customer is someone looking for a solution they can trust. Having grown up around small businesses, I understand that connection personally.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
Where it started
I've always had a connection to small business, ever since I was born. My father owns a local garden centre and I grew up witnessing what running a business looks like from the inside. My younger years were spent sitting in his office, being privy to how he would handle various customer or staff concerns, how he would consistently make efforts to improve his own expertise as well as his employees', and how he always kept his passion alive through the long days and nights. It wasn't until I was older that I realized what a privilege that was.
As I grew older, I began helping with the marketing (which is also when Facebook and Instagram started to become big). I remember feeling a little spark of excitement every time I knew my plans for the day were to design a flyer for Christmas inventory, take pictures of the plants and clothes to post on social media, or to capture the energy of an event we were hosting through images and videos. And on extra-special days, sometimes a customer would come in and say "I saw this on Instagram and I just had to come in and buy it!" — connecting the right products with the right people, and helping customers discover something they were genuinely excited to find, filled me with such a strong sense of pride. That's when I knew — marketing is where I want to be.
The best marketing doesn't feel like marketing. It feels like someone finally gets it.
That moment of connection—when the right product or solution reaches the right person at the right time—is what I'm always working toward, no matter what kind of business I'm supporting.

What I learned
Thanks to my early realization of my love for marketing, I took as many communications technology classes as I could at St. John's High School in Perth, ON. (Side note: I seriously couldn't get enough! My teacher had to create assignments for me because I kept finishing everything too quickly LOL!) Once I graduated, I enrolled in a Bachelor's degree of Communications and Media Studies at Carleton University and once I finished my degree, I entered the corporate world.
My mind was blown. I was used to being a one-woman show — coming up with the campaign and doing all the promotion for it myself (three or four people on a project being the most I'd ever worked with). Suddenly there were dozens of hands in a single campaign. Bigger teams, bigger budgets, multiple channels running at once. I seriously learned so much — how to think about strategy from the top down, how to keep a brand consistent when that many people are touching it, how to actually listen to a client and build something that helps them. Those years made me a much stronger marketer than I would have been otherwise.
But alas, somewhere along the way, the people on the other end of the work started to feel pretty distant. In corporate marketing, the goal is often the metric — the open rate, the pipeline number, the conversion. Which makes sense at that scale. But I kept thinking about the customers who came in because they saw something on Instagram. I wasn't getting that anymore — that feeling of truly connecting directly with a human being and helping them find exactly what they were looking for. I missed the version of this work that was based more on community than numbers.
Back to my roots
All of this experience was absolutely invaluable. I made some amazing connections and I learned so much about the industry, but also about myself. What I kept coming back to was this: the best part of any week is when a client tells me their marketing finally feels handled — that it sounds like them, that they're happy with it, that it's doing what it's supposed to do. There are so many talented, hardworking people out there running incredible businesses who just don't have the time or the background to do their own marketing well. Getting to be the person who takes that off their plate is where I do my best work.

HOW I WORK
What working together actually looks like
Working with me isn't like hiring an agency. There's no account manager, no handoff to someone you've never spoken to. It's just me, learning your business, understanding your voice, and showing up consistently for you the way I'd want someone to show up for mine.
I work remotely with small businesses and service providers across Canada and the United States. For businesses within a 60km radius of Smiths Falls, I'm available to connect in person when that makes sense too.
What you can expect
1
A real person in your corner
Someone who actually knows your business and is invested in how things go.
2
Content that feels like you
Not generic. Not AI-sounding. Marketing you can feel proud of.
3
Consistency you can count on
Planned in advance, delivered on time, reported back clearly.
4
Honest communication
If something isn't working, we'll talk about it. No smoke and mirrors.
